On 1 October, 16:15–17:45, a public lecture-seminar will take place in room 204 at Lossi 36. The event will be focusing on the question of “fixing” social media.

With social media overwhelmed by misinformation, AI-generated clutter, polarisation and hostility, we are prompted to ask: is there still something to be salvaged, or have we already given up?

The ENLIGHT universities' network project Social Media for Good explores how we, as citizens, experts from various fields, advocacy groups and consumers, might contribute to making social media a better environment.

During this event, Associate Professor of Media Studies Maria Murumaa-Mengel (University of Tartu), Assistant Professor in the Faculty of Economics and Business Edin Smailhodzic (University of Groningen), and Research Associate Tatjana Hödl at the Institute for Information Systems (University of Bern) will provide an overview of the key problems we are facing. Participants will then join forces to discuss possible solutions from a variety of perspectives, including platforms, communities, journalism, legislation and education.

The event is open to everyone, no prior knowledge is required.

The event is in English.
