Teaching the Happiness of Journalism: European educators gather in Tartu

From 20 to 22 May, the Institute of Social Studies of the University of Tartu is hosting the European Journalism Training Association (EJTA) Teachers’ Training 2026 in Tartu. The annual event brings together journalism educators, researchers and practitioners from across Europe to exchange experiences related to journalism teaching and discuss current developments in the field.

This year’s event, titled Beyond the Deadline: Teaching the Happiness of Journalism, focuses on the values, practices and environments that support journalists’ well-being, resilience and professional identity. The programme includes presentations and workshops on journalism education, mental health, artificial intelligence, data journalism, audience engagement, media resilience and innovative teaching methods.

Participants will discuss journalism students' well-being, motivation, professional identity, supportive learning environments, and the skills needed to thrive in a rapidly changing media landscape. The programme also addresses trauma-aware journalism, student engagement, professional sustainability and innovative teaching approaches in the context of AI and digital transformation.
