Brief description

Trans issues have always been newsworthy, but their portrayal has changed dramatically over the past two decades. From sensationalist and marginal coverage to front-page debates about rights, childhood, and the Spanish “Trans Law”, trans issues have moved from the margins to the center of public discussion. Yet increased visibility does not automatically guarantee fair or accurate representation. How the news media frame trans experiences can shape public opinion, influence political debates, and even affect the well-being and life trajectories of trans people.

This lecture examines how Spanish digital news media have represented trans issues and why this coverage matters. Drawing on seven empirical studies, it explores three key dimensions of communication: the message (how trans issues and trans minors are portrayed), the source (who drives the news agenda, including NGOs, journalists, and intermedia dynamics), and the receiver (how media representation impacts the social transitions of trans minors).

By connecting media theory with pressing social debates, the lecture highlights the powerful and often underestimated role of journalism in shaping the social reality of gender diversity. If news media can contribute to prejudice, they can also contribute to recognition, legitimacy, and social change.
