Professor Derek Hansen's public lecture “The Truth about Deception and AI”

On 22 March, from 18.00 to 19.00, professor Derek Hansen (Birgham Young University, USA) will give a public lecture “The Truth about Deception and AI” in Zoom.

Dr. Derek Hansen, Professor of Cybersecurity at Brigham Young University, Utah, USA, will discuss two recent studies on the role of Large Language Models (LLMs) in creating and identifying deceptive messages. One study pits humans against LLMs to see who creates more persuasive spear phishing messages. It introduces a novel sorting methodology to collect data from spear phishing targets, which combines qualitative and quantitative research techniques. Results demonstrate whether humans or AI create more compelling spear phishing text messages, how well humans can identify messages created by AI, and the criteria targets use to identify fake messages. The second study illustrates how well off-the-shelf LLMs identify disinformation. Results compare the accuracy of different prompts and characteristics of messages. Both studies will be put into a larger context of the role of AI in deception and fact checking.
