Centre for the Information Society of the University of Tartu is happy to welcome everyone on 17th October (14.00-18.00) to take part of an International seminar „Ethical Dilemmas of Internet (Researchers)“. The seminar will take place on the main building of the university, room 128.

Jan Richard Bærug, who recently defended his PhD at the University of Tartu, analysed the attitude of 691 newspapers and niche magazines of northern Europe to the merging of journalism and advertising. He found that three quarters of all analysed publications agreed to publish unlabelled marketing texts. According to Bærug, such hybridisation of journalism is a problem as it may weaken democracy.

From 7 to 14 July, academic staff and doctoral students from Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and North India participate in the University of Tartu summer school. At the summer school in Tartu, participants learn about new research methods in environmental health and epidemiology, which they can use to conduct similar studies in their home universities.

From 8 to 15 March, students of Marymount University participate in the international continuing education programme on cyber security at the University of Tartu. Participants of the programme visit the NATO Cooperative Cyber Defence Centre of Excellence in Estonia as well as Skype, Microsoft and other enterprises in Estonia and Finland. The 24 students participating in the programme come from various countries, including the USA, Thailand, Saudi Arabia, Uzbekistan, Afghanistan, Eritrea, Barbados, India and Ethiopia.

On September 8, the election commissions approved the dean candidates for the University of Tartu’s four faculties. The new deans are elected at the end of September and beginning of October and their term of office begins on 1 January 2016 when the university’s academic units continue as four faculties within the new structure.

The research project Usable and Efficient Secure Multi-party Computation led by Cybernetica AS received the highest possible mark from the European Commission in the final assessment. Recommendations by researchers of the University of Tartu Institute of Social Sciences helped the project reach the successful implementation of a secure computation system.

The University of Tartu has the largest number of graduates in Estonia—an estimated of 70 000 graduates. Aiming to bring the alumni community closer together, link them more to the university, develop mutual communication and professional cooperation, the University of Tartu launched a network for its alumni (www.utalumni.ee), novel in Estonia as well as Europe, the like of which is also used by the University of Oxford.

On 8 February, President Toomas Hendrik Ilves awarded by way of exception two Young Scientist Awards. The prize was given to UT mycologist Leho Tedersoo and media and communication researcher Andra Siibak. Graduate of the Institute of Computer Science Dan Bogdanov was given the Young IT Scientist Award. Leho Tedersoo is Senior Research Fellow in Ecology of Biological Interactions at the University of Tartu. In a short period of time he has founded his own research group and become an internationally acknowledged mycologist.

Authors of the twenty-year study “Me. The World. The Media” that was recently made into a book admit that Estonia is characterised by the ever deepening differentiation between population groups and the opposition between the accelerators and decelerators of social time. The findings of the comprehensive survey are more closely introduced at a conference in Tallinn on 18 April.

On December 9th, at the University of Tartu’s initiative, the first international business festival sTARTUp Day 2016 will be held. Over 1,000 entrepreneurs, investors, students, and scientists will come together and more than 40 speakers will discuss successful business models.

With the help of the researchers of the University of Tartu, three thousand Estonians responding to the questionnaire will contribute to European Social Survey analysing the impacts of climate change risk. Researchers want to find out whether people’s behaviour and attitudes are influenced by awareness, resources or other factors.

On March 24-25, 2017 organised in cooperation of the Tallinn University School of Governance, Law and Society and the Estonian Association of Sociologists, the ESAK 10 (the 10th Annual Conference of Estonian Social Sciences) “Estonia 100 – towards openness?” will be held once again. As representatives of sociology, political, economic and legal sciences, psychology and other disciplines, conference will try to collectively contribute to conceptualising societal processes.

Practical hands-on workshop “Advanced Twitter Analytics Using TCAT and Tableau” by professor Axel Bruns will take place on 3 November 2016 from 14-17 in the University of Tartu, Institute of Social Studies (Lossi 36, room 207).

Lectures “Civil-military relations: political, sociological and theoretical perspectives” by Dr. Rebecca Schiff will take place on November 14, 2016 and on November 15, 2016 in Tartu. Civil-military relations are a dynamic process evolving in the interplay between the political and military elites and the society at large. Dr. Rebecca Schiff, currently adjunct professor at the U.S Naval War College and the originator of concordance theory in civil-military relations, is holding lectures on these topics.

The 9th CEECOM 2016 Conference "Media and Communication Studies: Bridging Disciplines, Bridging Countries", Tartu, Estonia, 15-18 June 2016. Contemporary developments in science and education policy signal that media and communications studies could play a central role in linking various disciplines and fields of science by helping to create new understanding about the current processes in society and by offering solutions to various problems that individuals and societies are facing today.

On 29 February, University of Tartu Rector Volli Kalm and Sven Nuutmann, Chairman of the Management Board of Eesti Meedia, signed a cooperation agreement. The parties’ mutual interest is to promote the University of Tartu’s research and development activity, studies, continuing education of Eesti Meedia personnel and to contribute to Eesti Meedia channels with content and ideas.
