On Tuesday, 1 December, the University of Tartu celebrates the 96th anniversary of the national university with the traditional ceremony, torch-light procession and ball. Two honorary doctorates and 112 doctorates will be conferred at the ceremony and the University of Tartu Contribution to Estonian National Identity award will be presented. The ceremony is broadcasted live on www.uttv.ee.

On October 7th 2015, 14.00-16.00, Ülikooli 16-102 guest lecturer Charlotte Hagström from Lund University will give a public lecture “Wheels of Change: Reflections on Doing Applied Cultural Analysis at Lund University”. Bicycle is not just related to doing sports or getting from the point A to B. Cycling is culture, even more – it is a variety of cultures at different times and places.

The first academic week of the University of Tartu’s International Summer University has begun and for the first time in the summer university’s history, the developments of e–Estonia, cyber security and e–democracy are among the topics introduced. The summer university brings 215 learners from 30 countries to Tartu, making the town a centre of multicultural education for the week.

The university reputation survey by TNS Emor assured that, for already the seventh year, the most reputable university in Estonia is the University of Tartu. UT was valued the highest by young people aged 15–19. The high level of education at the University of Tartu and the diploma’s value in the labour market were valued the most.

Dear student! In autumn term 2015/2016, visiting professor Wolfgang Wagner from University of Linz (Austria) is teaching at the Institute of Social Studies. Researchers of the Institute of Social Studies of the University of Tartu participated in the survey Children’s Worlds which studied children’s subjective wellbeing and involved 50,000 children all over the world. The results indicate that compared to the children of other countries, Estonian children are rather satisfied with their time use and friendships, but more critical of how their parents take into account what children say. Moreover, Estonian children are the most critical of school.

The international consultation company Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) published its QS World University Rankings by Subject 2015, which ranks the world’s universities in 36 subjects. The University of Tartu is represented in the ranking list with five subjects. The UT has the highest position in communication and media studies (101–150), in which it is ranked for the third year already. This is followed by philosophy (151–200), English language and literature (201–250), modern languages (251–300) and medicine (301–350).

We wish to recruit a Postdoctoral fellow to the research project HEALTHDOX (02.2015- 02.2018). The research project HEALTHDOX aims to explore future trajectories of European health politics and policies through an investigation of the impact of recent health reforms on health inequalities, health expenditures, and public attitudes towards both the health system and the welfare state.

On November 4th, the multinational research network EU Kids Online published the interactive final report of the research project carried out in 2006–2014. In the project focussed on the opportunities and risks related to children’s internet use, Estonia is represented by the Institute of Social Studies of the University of Tartu.

From the 1st of January 2014 the Institute of Journalism, Communication and Information Studies and the Institute of Sociology and Social Policy merged into one unit. The name of the institute is Institute of Social Studies. The reason for the merging was to join similar fields of studies and to create better premises for cooperation and synergy.

From the 1st of July the Information Science Department of the Viljandi Culture Academy of the University of Tartu merged with the Institute of Journalism and Communication. The name of the institute in Tartu is changed to the Institute of Journalism, Communication and Information Studies.

Dr. Gabrielle Hogan-Brun, senior research fellow at the University of Bristol and the University of Basel will give a public lecture on the topic "Dealing with language diversity: approaches from above and from below" on Thursday, December 13th, 14.15-15.15 at Lossi 36-206.

New Forms of Social Life, Collaboration and Learning with New Media Abstract of presentation The origins of the term “New Media” are in the late 1980’s and 1990’s when digital and computerized media started to gain space from the “old” media, such as printed publications, television and radio. Digital technology made it possible to have forms of media that are more interactive, networked and social. Manovich (2002) defines New Media as a “mix between existing cultural conventions and conventions of software”.

Last week the European Communication Conference was held in Istanbul, where Epp Lauk, Senior Research Fellow in Journalism and professor in the University of Jyväskylä was elected to the ECREA Board. Pille Pruulmann-Vengerfeldt, Senior Lecturer in Media Studies and Head of Institute was elected to be the chair of ECREA Audience and Reception Studies. Margit Keller, Senior Research Fellow in Social Communication was elected in summer to be the chair of Sociology of Consumption in European Sociological Association (ESA). Congratulations!
